U.K. operator to try out carrier aggregation in London using 1800-MHz, 2.6-GHz bands.

Further details of EE's upcoming LTE-A carrier aggregation (CA) trial emerged this week.

A source at the U.K. operator told Total Telecom that the trial will take place in London, and that it will use frequencies in the 1800-MHz and 2.6-GHz bands. The source did not divulge when the trial will begin; however, EE has previously announced it will take place before the end of 2013.

Going with 2.6-GHz spectrum makes sense; EE acquired 2x35 MHz of it at February's auction, whereas it secured just 2x5 MHz of 800-MHz spectrum, which is enough to offer good coverage over long distances and indoors, but not so good when it comes to providing a meaningful boost in peak connection speed.

EE has been busy making the most of its head start in the U.K.'s 4G market, rolling out double-speed LTE to 15 locations and counting.

It has even tweaked its PR messages for greater effect. When EE said in April it was doubling the speed of its LTE network, it quoted a real-world maximum speed of 80 Mbps. However, when it actually began carrying out the work in July, it referenced the maximum speed achievable under laboratory conditions, which is 150 Mbps.

And with O2 due to launch 4G services at the end of August, EE will likely try even harder to trumpet the merits of its more mature LTE network, which will include carrier aggregation before too long.
